Lessons from John 1

Updated: Feb 24

Talk given by Owen P. in church sacrament meeting, Huntington Beach, CA., 1/22/23

Good morning, Brothers and Sisters. My name is Owen.

Yesterday I had tryouts for baseball, and I’m really excited to start playing. I also have a cute dog named Oreo. He is a black lab mix, and he is a dumb dog.

My talk today is partly about last week’s “Come, Follow Me” lesson. My family read all the verses in John, Chapter One. It talked about John being a witness of the Light. But “light” was capitalized, which means it's talking about a person. That person is Christ. So you can actually read the verses like this:

“7. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the {Christ}, that all men through him might believe.

8. He /John/ was not that {Christ}, but was sent to bear witness of that {Christ}.

9. That was the true {Christ}, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” (John 1: 7 – 9)

My whole family has been baptized. And we recently learned that there are two baptisms. The first is a baptism where you get your sins washed away by the water cleansing them. And the second is called “the laying on of hands”, or as the scriptures tell us – a baptism of The Holy Ghost. (John 1: 33) Because I have learned about Christ, and how He is our Savior and He died for us – I like learning about his earthly experiences when I read the scriptures.

Also – I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
